Do a car safety check before you <\/span>leave<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Before you leave for your holiday, it\u2019s always a good idea to<\/span> take your car for a full check-up<\/span>, advises Stamier<\/span>.<\/span> \u201cYou want to have peace of mind that your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition before departure,\u201d she asserts.<\/span><\/p>\n

This includes checking your <\/span>tyre<\/span> tread and pressure. \u201cWorn-out <\/span>tyres<\/span> reduce grip, increasing the risk of skidding,\u201d she says. \u201cEnsure all <\/span>tyres<\/span>, including the spare, have sufficient tread depth and are properly inflated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s also advisable to test that your car braking system is functional. \u201cEnsure your brakes are responsive and <\/span>that all<\/span> lights (headlights, brake lights, <\/span>and<\/span> indicators) are working properly,\u201d Stamier recommends.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ensure your child\u2019s car seat is installed <\/span>properly<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Even though it\u2019s a legal requirement that children under the age of three years are secured in a car seat, many still travel without proper restraints. According to the NGO Wheel Well, eight out of ten car seats they inspect are either incorrectly adjusted, not installed properly, or <\/span>not suitable<\/span> for the child\u2019s stage of development.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMake sure your child\u2019s car seat is age-appropriate and securely fastened according to the manufacturer\u2019s guidelines,\u201d urges Stamier. \u201cAlso, never place a rear-facing car seat <\/span>in front of<\/span> an active airbag.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of the urgent need to address children\u2019s safety on SA roads, Old Mutual Insure has teamed up with Wheel Well by donating 500 car seats to <\/span>families in need<\/span>. \u201cThrough this initiative, we are <\/span>prioritising<\/span> child passenger safety and highlighting the message that every life matters,\u201d she says.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Another good tip before departing on a long trip is to confirm your motor insurance policy is active and provides adequate coverage, advises Stamier. \u201cThe last thing you want is to break down in the middle of nowhere with limited or even worse, without any insurance cover,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n

The winners are expected to be announced in early May.<\/span><\/p>\n
