duties of 34% announced by Trump, on top of tariffs of 20% imposed earlier this year, lifting to 76% the average US tariff on Chinese goods.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the tariffs keep going up and up, it becomes a battle of wills and principles rather than economics,&#8221; said Xu Tianchen, a senior economist for<span>&nbsp;China&nbsp;<\/span>at the Economist Intelligence Unit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since<span>&nbsp;China&nbsp;<\/span>already faces a tariff rate in excess of 60%, it doesn&#8217;t matter if it goes up by 50% or 500%,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p><span>China&nbsp;<\/span>has stepped up efforts to shield its economy from global market turmoil following Trump&#8217;s announcement.<\/p>\n<p>O<span>n Tuesday,&nbsp;China&#8217;s state planner said it had met domestic private firms, including Trina Solar<\/span>,<span>&nbsp;<\/span><span>ride-hailing company Didi, and Goertek<\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><span>to hear suggestions on how to deal with the ad<\/span>i<span>tional duties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While&nbsp;<\/span>several state holding companies pledged to increase share investment, a slew of listed companies unveiled buybacks, and the central bank pledged liquidity support for fund Central Huijin after it intervened to support sinking stocks.<\/p>\n<p>But there is no escaping the fact that Trump&#8217;s affinity for tariffs risks derailing<span>&nbsp;China<\/span>&#8216;s largely export-led economic<span>&nbsp;<\/span><span>recovery given that no other country comes close to the consumption power of the US, where Chinese producers sell more than $400 billion worth of goods annually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Chinese people &#8220;do not provoke trouble, nor are we afraid of it,&#8221;
