This global event not only serves as a platform for international dialogue among governments but also promises to significantly boost local tourism, offering a much-needed economic boost to the bustling metropolis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, for the long-term benefits of the summit to be felt, which could be through deals being struck, South Africa needs to continue resolving infrastructure bottlenecks to lead as a central logistics hub.<\/p>\n<p>Berry Everitt, CEO of the Chas Everitt International property group, said the talks can act as a \u201cpowerful showcase of the country\u2019s attractions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Everitt added that international tourism has extremely positive effects on the local property market.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics South Africa figures show that from January to September this year, the country welcomed more than 7.6 million international visitors.<\/p>\n<p>This represents an increase of more than 1.1 million compared to the same period in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Government estimates indicate that, for every 12 arrivals, at least one direct and one indirect job is created.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis translates into more than 160 000 additional livelihoods supported across hospitality, transport, food production, arts and crafts \u2013 and real estate,\u201d said Everitt.<\/p>\n<p>Tourism contributes almost 9% to gross domestic product (GDP) and supports 1.68 million jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTourism and real estate have always been closely linked,\u201d Everitt said.<\/p>\n<p>Everitt noted that, \u201cwhen global attention turns to any destination, visitor numbers rise, confidence grows and<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iol.co.za\/business\/economy\/2025-11-15-sp-upgrades-south-africas-credit-rating-after-two-decades\/\">investment tends to follow<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, Dr Ernst van Biljon, head lecturer of Supply Chain Management at the IMM Graduate School, cautioned that South Africa \u201cmust confront its domestic bottlenecks head-on\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Van Biljon said it was important for South Africa to remain competitive in terms of logistics and supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>The South African logistics and supply chain sector contributes around 11.8% to the country&#8217;s GDP.<\/p>\n<p>However, the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iol.co.za\/business\/economy\/2025-11-12-enoch-godongwana-predicts-12-economic-growth-for-south-africa-this-year\/\">total economic impact<\/a>, including the cost of inefficiencies and related issues, is even higher.<\/p>\n<p>Although strides have been made to reform Transnet, \u201cfreight rail and port systems are operating at less than 50% efficiency in key corridors, eroding export competitiveness,\u201d said Van Biljon.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as the summit\u2019s agenda aligns closely with South Africa\u2019s economic imperatives \u2013<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iol.co.za\/business\/economy\/2025-11-04-inside-the-r276bn-rebuild-how-eskom-prasa-and-sanral-are-driving-growth\/\">infrastructure reform, industrial diversification and sustainable growth<\/a>, said Van Biljon.<\/p>\n<p>Energy, roads, and rails have been driving public-sector spending, which rose for a third consecutive year in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics South Africa said in a report on government infrastructure spending that this figure reached R276 billion in 2024 from R234 billion in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s an 18% increase and follows a five-year downturn, which started in 2016, IOL&#8217;s calculations show.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BUSINESS REPORT<\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Johannesburg opens its doors to the world, thousands of delegates, support staff, business leaders, and media teams are flocking to the city for the highly anticipated G20 summit.
