There has been an ongoing narrative that there is a shortage of artisans in South Africa. Some in the industry may argue that the issue is not the lack of artisans but rather that qualified artisans are unable to find <\/span>employment<\/span>.<\/p>\n

In efforts of addressing the issue of a shortage of qualified artisans and <\/span>employment<\/span>, Anglo American Zimele, in partnership with the <\/span>Artisan<\/span> <\/span>Training<\/span> <\/span>Institute (ATI), recently launched an artisanal <\/span>skills<\/span> <\/span>development <\/span>programme<\/span> <\/span>aimed at <\/span>youth<\/span> <\/span>from their host communities in the Northern Cape.<\/p>\n

The three- to four-year <\/span>programme<\/span> <\/span>began in November 2024 and will train 75 young people from the communities around Kumba Iron Ore\u2019s Sishen and Kolomela mines.<\/p>\n

The <\/span>programme<\/span> <\/span>combines institutional and workplace learning at ATI\u2019s fully accredited Kimberley campus where candidates are trained in nine essential trades, including auto electrical, heavy equipment mechanics, and instrumentation.<\/p>\n

Successful graduates will receive internationally recognised Red Seal Certificates from the Department of Higher Education and <\/span>Training<\/span>.<\/p>\n

All the accredited engineering trades will meet a minimum of NQF level 4 status, positioning them for careers in various industries.<\/p>\n

Beyond technical <\/span>training<\/span>, we\u2019re providing full accommodation, meals and transport support to ensure our learners can focus entirely on their development.\u201d<\/p>\n

The <\/span>programme<\/span> <\/span>demonstrates Anglo American\u2019s ongoing commitment to sustainable community development and economic transformation in its operating regions, where <\/span>skills<\/span> <\/span>development plays a crucial role in breaking the cycle of unemployment and creating sustainable livelihoods.<\/p>\n

The initiative directly supports key objectives of South Africa\u2019s National Development Plan (NDP) 2030, particularly its goals for economic transformation and job creation.<\/p>\n

Zimele\u2019s approach to <\/span>youth<\/span> <\/span>development is job-centric which focuses on 30% <\/span>training<\/span>, 40% support and 30% effectiveness on the job in efforts of opening pathways beyond mining.<\/p>\n
